Nur Nabila, Nurul Huda, Mi Yen, Alia Are In The Semi-Finals, Malaysian Women Masters 2010

At the DATCC, a drama unfolded as Nur Nabila and Khairunnisa Wahiduddin had to go through a late afternoon playoff stage to determine the last ticket to the Semi-Finals of the Malaysian Women Masters 2010 on the second day (27th February 2010) of the knock-out chess tournament. Earlier, three players easily managed to qualify to the semi-finals, which included Nurul Huda, Fong Mi Yen and Alia Anin Azwa bt Bakri.

The last remaining ticket for the semi-finals had to go through an additional hurdle of playing two rapid games tonight, 27th February 2010 at the DATCC to determine the fourth candidate to the semi-finals.

The playoffs were shown live through the internet at Gilachess.blog and Malaysian Women Masters blog. As the results shown in the table summary below, Nur Nabila bt Azman Hisham prevailed by drawing the first rapid game and winning the second game against Khairunnisa Wahiduddin.

For the Semi-Finals tomorrow, 28th February 2010, first board will played by Nurul Huda against Nur Nabila Azman Hisham and on second board by Fong Mi Yen against Alia Anin Azwa bt Bakri.

DATCC Rookie Tornado 2010

Twenty-eight players are participating in the DATCC ROOKIE TORNADO chess tournament being held at DATCC on 27th February 2010. You need a rating below 1400 to participate. The second picture is showing Dato' Tan Chin Nam, the Malaysian chess supremo, having an exhibition chess match with a chess visitor and Andrew Ooi, gilachess blogger having a separate chess game with another chess visitor.

Malaysian Women Masters 2010 Blog!

The current series of the Malaysian Women Masters 2010 is on-going today and will go on till 2nd March 2010. Sixteen handpicked female chess candidates had been carefully selected based on a strict regime of selection criteria set by the Malaysian Chess Federation.

Two rounds had been played today at the Dato’ Arthur Tan Chess Centre and a knock-out system will take place.

Tomorrow eight players will play two more rounds of classical chess and on Sunday four players, who get through to the next stage, will play two rounds  to determine the final two contestants.

The winner will get the chance to represent Malaysia to the Chess Olympiad to be held in Siberia, Russia during the later part of this year, 2010.

Berita Terkini: Fireyrook telah menerima panggilan talipon pada malam ini jam 11.10 malam, Khamis, 25 Februari 2010 yang menyebut pertandingan catur berpasukan Tun Syed Zaharuddin ini hanya dialihkan dewan sahaja.

Oleh itu pertandingan catur ini akan masih diteruskan seperti yang dirancang iaitu 28 Februari 2010 sebelum ini namun di lokasi dewan yang baru. Pertandingan catur ini merupakan pertandingan tahunan yang dianjurkan oleh pihak Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur. Pertandingan catur ini akan terus diadakan pada hari Ahad ini bersamaan 28 Februari 2010 di Kolej KeSembilan, Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur.

Ian Udani Is UTP Open 2010 Chess Champion!

Ian Udani beat 97 others to win the Universiti Teknologi Petronas Open 2010 category held at UTP, Seri Iskandar, Perak on the 21st February 2010. Ian Udani managed 6.5 points from 7 rounds of chess rapids. His only draw was against Tan Khai Boon, who was second with six points. In third place was Sumant Subramaniam, fourth Nur Nabila Azman Hisham, fifth Abdullah Che Hassan. All four players got the same 6.0 points.

The following are the final ranking results of the UTP Open category:-

In the Under-18 category, Sarika Subramaniam won with 6.0 points while in the Under-12 category, Muhd Sirajuddin Munawar Ahmad Farhan was the Champion.

1st Woman National Masters 2010

The first Malaysian Woman National Masters 2010 is starting this Friday, 26th February 2010 at the DATCC. Fourteen players have confirmed their participation. It will last over three days, 26th-28th February, 2010.

Khairunissa’ Wahiduddin, Nurul Huda Wahiduddin, Fong Mi Yen, Haslindah Ruslan, Tan Li Ting, Nur Nabila Azman Hisham and Nur Najiha Azman Hisham are a few of the notables that have confirmed their participation so far.

KL Chess Academy’s Chess Camp In March 2010

The Kuala Lumpur Chess Academy is organising a chess training camp with GM Ziaur Rahman as the star lecturer for the event.

The chess camp is slated for the 17-20th March 2010 with a team of chess trainers which include IM Lim Yee Weng, IM Mas, Gregory Lau and Najib Wahab. A star-studded line-up as your chess trainers.

Grand Prix Chess In Perak Too!

As the grand prix continues to catch fire in Malaysia, another state is also embarking on a similar grand prix style of chess tournament. This time it is the state of Perak!

Those of you Perakians who have been itching to join one tournament or other because it was in Kuala Lumpur or in Melaka or in Penang and you decided not to go. Well dear chess friend, one just landed by your door step. This grand prix will be held over 10 districts of Perak with the last one culminating back to Ipoh as the grand finale!

The first leg will be held in Ipoh, Perak on the 7th March 2010 (Sunday). So hurry up to book a place as the closing date will be on the 4th March 2010.

Singapore Wins The Dato' Tan Kim Yeow Trophy!

Latest news: Singapore won over the last round of the chess rapids, 21-17. Overall score, 76.5-75.5 Singapore won by a solitary point. Singapore's major wins came from the Veteran, Men's and Under-18 sections in general. IM Jimmy Liew, IM Yee Weng won their respective games in the final round. Unfortunately, not for IM Mok who faced time trouble and a weak position.

Here are the full results of both rounds for yesterday’s games using the 90 minutes plus 30 second increment, classical times for the Malaysia-Singapore Chess Challenge 2010 (Dato’ Tan Kim Yeow Trophy) held at the CitiTel Express Hotel, Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Kuala Lumpur, 16th February 2010.

Amazing results at the CitiTel Express, Malaysia 19-19 Singapore, we were outclassed in the Senior and Under 18 Sections but my, my, our younger Malaysian brethren are pulling us through! Good job, team Malaysia!

This morning will be held the chess rapids between Malaysia-Singapore Chess Challenge 2010. It will decide the winner of the Dato’ Tan Kim Yeow Challenge Trophy. If you are game to watch this, it is held in rooms Perdana 1 and 2, Median Level, CitiTel Express Hotel, Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Kuala Lumpur beginning at 9 am, 17th February 2010. Malaysia-Singapore Chess Challenge - Dato' Tan Kim Yeow Challenge Trophy 2010

Latest News: Team Malaysia leads with 22 points against Singapore's 16 points after completion of Round 1 here at CITITEL EXPRESS Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. This is a biannual chess event between Malaysia and Singapore and the winner will get to hold the Dato' Tan Kim Yeow Chess Challenge Trophy for a year and probably the name of the country that wins will get engraved on the trophy. As at the time of updating, the second round of the chess challenge is ongoing with the score level at 2-2. Segamat Grand Prix 2010, 1st Leg

If you live in Johor and had always yearned to participate in a chess tournament, then one has just landed by your doorstep. And if you like the idea of grandprix style tournament, then this your golden chance to grab.

The new chess tournament is jointly organised by MSSKL Event Management, Malaysian Chess Federation and SMK Seri Kenangan, Segamat, Johor. And it is called the “SMK Seri Kenangan Rapid Chess Grandprix @SMK Seri Kenangan, Segamat, Johor”. It will have four legs in its series of tournaments beginning with 6-7th March 2010. It will climax with a fourth and grand finale in early July 2010. The rapid tournament adopts the 45 minutes time control per player per game with a 7 rounds Swiss-system spread over two days.

Seremban Parade Chess Championship 2010

Latest News: There is a new chess rapid tournament in the Seremban area. The Seremban Parade is organising a two-day chess tournament on the 27-28th February 2010 covering several categories. Two age-groups of Under-12 and Under-18 will be held on the first day of the tournament, 27th February 2010, while the open category held on the second day, 28th February 2010.

Invite To Commonwealth Chess Championship, New Delhi, India, May 2010

The Malaysian Chess Federation has received an invite from the All India Federation with auspices of FIDE and Commonwealth Chess Association for MCF to send a chess team comprising of one girl and one boy for all age categories (U-8, U-10, U-12, U-14, U-16, U-18, U-20),  one woman and one man to participate in the Commonwealth Chess Championship from the 9th to 19th May 2010 in New Delhi, India.

In the last round of the First Saturday Classical Chess February 2010 edition, Firey Rook met up with Low Jun Keat to determine the top five finishers of the tournament.

Firey rook had to try something new against this young player. Firey rook chose the Morra Gambit of the Sicilian against Low Jun Keat who has a National Rating of 1590. Here is how the game transpired, it ended  in 18 moves with a definite win for white.

Latest News: Here is the latest on the 1st Leg of the KL Grand Prix Chess Open 2010 being held at Royal Selangor Club on the 7th February 2010 - 1st Yeoh Li Tian – 6 points, 2nd Nik Ahmad Farouqi, 3rd Sumant Subramaniam, 4th Amitphal, 5th Ahmad Fadhil Nayan, 6th Roshan Singh, 7th Fadli, 8th Chan Sheng Yang, 9th Zainal Faeizul, 10th Mohamed Hezri and 11th Yat Guo Jie.

Today, 6th February 2010, at the KL Rapid Chess Grandprix 2010, in the Open Category, five players ended with 2 points from 2 rounds. The five co-leaders are Amithpal, Sumant, Ahmad Fadzil, Yeoh Li Tian and Faiezul Zainal. Amithpal Singh Sardar, the winner of the recent City Day Chess Blitz 2010, is the only foreign player in the field and hails from India with a 2203 FIDE-rating.

A few notable names are Yat Guo Jie with 1.5 points, Nik Ahmad Farouqi, Mohamed Abdul Haq, both with 1.0 point, Roshan Singh with 1.0 point, Demudu Subramaniam and daughter Sarika Subramaniam with 1.0 point.

Surprisingly, Mohd Fadli Zakaria @Stonemaster, who has a FIDE-rating of 2070, ends the day with zilch after two rounds! Competition is stiff! This field of players is no push overs! Though it is stilll early days yet! Tomorrow will be another hectic day for these players.

MultiMedia University (MMU) Malacca International Chess Open 2010 Update!

Latest news: Here is the list of registered players for the MMU Malacca International Open 2010 up till 4th February 2010, to be held this coming weekend 6-7 February 2010 at Bukit Beruang, Malacca.

There are currently 15 registered chess players for the event, which includes Ian Udani and Kamaluddin Yusof, Gang Mamak team. Though was expecting Nicholas Chan’s name in this list. They are as follows:-

Chess Reinstated In Schools!

Tonight’s TV3 News at 8pm, 4 February 2010 has announced that the Deputy Prime Minister has reinstated the 11 sports in schools that were axed with an additional allocation of RM89 million. With this announcement, chess in school program should be reinstated and long live chess in MSSM. Yay!!

Weekend Chess Activities (6-7 February 2010)

This coming weekend promises to be another busy weekend for chess in Malaysia. There will be four concurrent chess activities for the weekend.

The four activities are as follows:

a.First Saturday Classical Chess. Feb 6 and 7. Venue Excel Chess Academy. Click here for details;
b. MMU Malacca International Chess Open 2010. Feb 6 and 7. Venue MMU Bukit Beruang, Malacca. Click here for details;
c. KL Grand Prix 2010, Card Room of the Royal Selangor Club at Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur. First Leg: 6-7 February 2010. Click here for details; and                                                                            d. SMK Seri Putra Chess Open in Ipoh, Perak. 7 February 2010. Click here for details.

If you prefer the classical chess time control of 90 minutes plus 30 second increment, which is the standard time control for FIDE Rated tournament, then go for the First Saturday Classical Chess tournament that is being organised by the Excel Chess Academy.

If you  prefer a slightly shorter time control, then you may prefer to go for the KL Grand Prix 2010 at the Royal Selangor Club where they will use the 45 minutes time control.

If you prefer going out of the Klang Valley or Kuala Lumpur area, then you might go for the MultiMedia University Malacca International Chess Open 2010 held in Bukit Beruang, Malacca. I hear that they will use the same 45 minutes time control for the tournament but nothing has firmed up yet. It all depends on the arbiter’s decision, though when the tournament director was consulted, he did say, three rounds on the first day and four rounds on the second day.

If your home town is in Perak, you might decide to drop by Ipoh and join the chess open tournament held by a secondary school there on the 7th February 2010.

So take your pick! It is a chess player’s paradise. You can choose which to go to.

Further ahead, there will be a Malaysia-Singapore Chess Challenge 2010 on the 15-17 February 2010 and to be played at CitiTel, MidValley, Kuala Lumpur. Click here for details. This is a friendly chess challenge between two neighbouring countries to gauge each country’s strength in the field of chess. Based on fide.com rankings, Malaysia is located at number 67 and Singapore at 59, if I am not mistaken.

If you look  still further ahead, there will be a team event called the “Pertandingan Catur Terbuka Piala Tun Syed Zahiruddin” on the  28 February 2010 at the Ninth College, University of Malaya, KL. Further details at this link .

A New FIDE-rated Chess Tournament

There is a new FIDE-rated chess tournament that is being organised by INSOFAR Chess Academy that will be held once in two weeks on a Thursday night.

If you are a full weekend person and wish to have it for the family, then the alternative is to use your week nights for catching up with some chess play.

It is very unique and allows a person another avenue for reaching his ambition or goals of a FIDE rating.

Chess In Malaysia - Introduction

Malaysia is a fairly small country in the South East Asian region where chess is becoming more popular among its populace. Currently, it is ranked 67th in the world in terms of its average rating of its ten most highly ranked players.It is behind Philippines, Vietnam and Singapore in this respect. While Malaysia is ahead in ranked when compared to countries like Thailand, Myanmar, Brunei and South Korea. Surprisingly, Malaysia does not have a grandmaster yet, though it does have 5 International Masters, 7 FIDE Masters and 18 titled players amongst its rank.

At the moment, Indonesia could not be located on the fide.com listing, though I have a feeling that Indonesia should be ranked above Malaysia as it has a number of grandmasters amongst its chess fraternity.

The Malaysian Chess Federation is the leading chess organisation in Malaysia that is spearheading activities in Malaysia and has the Dato' Arthur Tan Chess Centre (DATCC) as its nerve center for chess activities. Nevertheless, the various state and club chess associations do conduct their own activities and tournaments in their own states or area. At the same time, one will find quite a few of the sprouting chess academies in Malaysia are also conducting their own chess tournaments and training for the benefit of the chess fraternity. There is a strong need to satisfy chess lovers and enthusiasts with some weekend activities in order to satiate their appetite for playing chess.

I am among the many that has been hit by the chess bug and an ardent follower of the various sprouting chess activities in the country. Chess is gradually snow balling into a bigger sport with more and more chess activities appearing by the day.

I hope to capture that spirit of enthusiasm for chess in the coming months on this blog and report them as it happens for the benefit of Malaysian chess lovers.
