Ukraine Maintains Slim Lead, 39th Chess Olympiad

2 October 2010, Khanty-Mansiysk – At the 39th Chess Olympiad, the Open team Ukraine continues to lead after winning 3.5-0.5 over France in round 10. Ukraine has 18 MPs. Team Ukraine is composed of  Vassily Ivanchuk, Ruslan Ponamariov, Pavel Eljanov, Zahar Efimenko and Alexander Moiseenko.

However, Russia 1, the initial top favorite, is catching up with a win, 2.5-1.5, over China. Russia 1 now has 17 MPs and lying in second place. Russia 1 comprise of Vladimir Kramnik, Alexander Grischuk, Peter Svidler and Sergey Karjakin.

Ukraine will meet Israel, the third place team, in Round 11 and Russia 1 will meet Spain, the 7th place team which has GM Shirov on board 1.

Malaysia has fallen to 106th position from 102nd position, with 8 MP, still ahead of Wales, the team that Malaysia drew 2-2 with in the 10th round. Malaysia will now meet Bahrain in the final 11th round tomorrow, Sunday, 3rd October 2010.
