Economist-SGSEU-1 Springs Surprise Win, ECC 2010

22 October 2010, Plovdiv – The fourth seeded team sprang a surprise win over top seeds SOCAR Azerbaijan with a 4-2 win in the fifth round of the European Chess Club Cup 2010 in Bulgaria. This means, SOCAR suffered their first team loss and catapults Russian team Economist-SGSEU-1 as the topgun chess team on the leaderboard.

Meanwhile team Mika Yerevan of Armenia drew 3-3 with opponents G-Team Novy Bor. Mika Yerevan is still unbeaten. While St.Petersburg Chess Club beat Bosnian team Bihac CK, 3.5-2.5.

Rankings of teams after Round 5, ECC 2010 shown below. Economist-SGSEU-1 takes topboard leadership with 10 points and Armenian Mika Yerevan are in second place with 9 points. Ukrainian A DAN DZO & PGMB – Chernigiv are in third with 8 points.

Team Ennis Chess Club of Ireland was given a bye in the fifth round and that means the team has a rest for one round. Hopefully they will come recharged for the sixth round game. They will meet European team Expik.
