Decision Time

7 August 2010, Kuala Lumpur – In today’s chess column of the TheStar Online by SS Quah, he discusses the views of one of Malaysia’s non-active International Master on when to decide to turn professional in chess.
The Star Online
The future of Malaysian chess players that want to upgrade from amateur to professional has to be made early in their life in order to achieve their life-long ambition of becoming a future chess grandmaster. This is the opinion of Wong Zijing who is currently studying in the USA for his post-graduate doctoral studies in metamaterials.
Discussion revolves on encouraging potential chess players like Yeoh Li Tian who has to make a critical decision as to whether he wishes to become full time chess player like Vietnam’s grandmaster Le Quang Liem or become like most leading Malaysian players who have had to sacrifice chess for their professional careers in engineering or medicine or actuaries.
