Wesley So On A Winning Streak!

24 January 2011, Kuala Lumpur – Mark Crowthers of TWIC reported that Magnus Carlsen defeated Hikaru Nakamura in a fine attacking game to throw the A-Group of the Tata Steel Wijk aan Zee tournament wide open.

Nakamura on 5.5/8 is now in the joint lead with Viswanathan Anand who drew with Levon Aronian (who is half a point back and looks to have the easiest run in). Aronian, Carlsen, Vladimir Kramnik and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave are on 5 points. Alexei Shirov beat Alexander Grischuk for his first win.

Wesley So scored his fourth win in a row to lead the B-Group by half a point from Luke McShane. Wesley’s eighth round game against W Spoelman is shown near the end of this post.

Here is the game viewer of the 8th round game that shook the tournament between Magnus Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura. A Sicilian Sveshnikov opening transpired with white having a kingside pawn attack on black. While white did a queenside castling. It was a race to the finish as both sides had chances to check the opposing king.

Here is the 4th win in a row for Wesley So in the Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2011 during the 8th round against Spoelman Wouter. Wesley So played black in this game. The endgame had white with the bishops’ pair with five pawns up against black’s lonley rook and six pawns. White’s only advanced pawn on the d file was on the file that white was attacking the black pawns. This translates to winning tempo for black as the black rook can easily win the lonely advance white pawn.
