Barbosa Oliver crashes out of World Cup 2013 Tromso

17th August 2013, Kuala Lumpur - Today will be the team's event in the Malaysia Chess Festival 2013 but in Tromso, Norway, the 128 player tournament in the World Cup 2013 is taking place.

The official website describes The FIDE World Chess Cup as one of the highlights of the chess calendar – a month of intense knockout action that uses 7 quick-fire rounds to whittle 128 players down to one. At stake is not only a cool $1.6 million prize fund ($120,000 for the winner) but qualification for next year’s World Championship “Candidates” tournament – a chance to earn the right to a match against the World Champion, either India’s Viswanathan Anand or Norway’s own Magnus Carlsen.

This year Barbosa Oliver of Philippines headed to Tromso instead of Kuala Lumpur. Here is the round 1 game of Barbosa Oliver against Vietnam's Le Quang Liem. Barbosa lost 0-2 to Le. Meanwhile Le made past the second round of the World Cup by overcoming Vallejo Pons Franscisco of Spain, 2.5-1.5.
