13 May 2012, Kuala Lumpur – Here is a round 8 report of the Asian Continental Championships 2012 from Casto Abundo in Vietnam.

Negi beats Barbosa to maintain solo lead in Open

GM Negi Parimarjan of India (right) crushed the Caro Kann defense of GM Oliver Barbosa of the Philippines (left) in 41 moves to maintain solo lead after the penultimate round of the Asian Continental Championship in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Negi, playing White at left, exposed the weakness of Black's uncaslted King with the shocker 33.Ne4! Negi leads with 7 points followed by GM Yu Yangyi of China with 6½ points. Tied with 5½ points each are Barbosa, Chinese GMs Ding Liren and Ni Hua, and GM Salem Saleh of the United Arab Emirates.

In the Women’s section, WGM Mary Ann Gomes of India (left) stopped WGM Irene Sukandar of Indonesia (right) to win in 42 moves of a Reti Opening. Gomes grabbed solo lead with 6½ points followed by Sukandar with 6 points.

Seven players follow with 5½ points, namely Chinese Zhao Xue, Tan Zhongyi, Ding Yixin and Wang Jue, IM Eesha Karavade and WGM Padmini Rout, both of India, and WGM Le Thanh Tu of Vietnam.

Chinese WGMs Ding Yixin and Tan Zhongyi drew in 30 moves of a Pirc Defense. Untitled Wang Jue of China drew with Karavade in 69 moves of a French Defense.

Zhao Xue used the Bogo Indian defense to beat WIM Nakhbayeva Guliskhan of Kazakhstan in 51 moves. WGM Le Thanh Tu used the Alekhine defesne to beat WGM Swathi Ghate of India in 54 moves.

WGM Padmini Rout used the Gruenfed and won in a beautiful endgame against WGM Nguyen Thi Thanh An of Vietnam in 64 moves. After 52.Rxh5 Padmini took advantage of the White pawns blocking the Rook and Bishop with 52...Nc2 53.Kf1 Kd4 54.Ke2 Nxe1 55.Kxe1 Kd3 56.Rxg5 e2 57.Rg4 Be5 58.Kf2 Bc3 59.Re4 Kxe4 with one piece up for an easy win.
