Jobava Wins For Georgia!

26 September 2010, Khanty-Mansiysk – During the round 5 of the Chess Olympiad in Siberia, Russia, in the critical board 1 in the Georgia-Vietnam match, the game between GM Jobava of Georgia and GM Le Quang of Vietnam was played. GM Jobava overcomes GM Le Quang in board 1 giving Georgia an important point.

After Jobava took the white queen at move 44…Qxb8, white thinks that he has removed the pin on rook f3 and takes the rook at d3, 45. Rxd3 and now Jobava moves in for the kill with 45…Qb4, threatening the white knight at a4, white resigned.If knight moves to c3, then the black queen will slowly win the loose white pawns and can easily win the position for the black. 0-1.


Georgia wins against Vietnam 3.5-0.5 and jumps to the top of the leaderboard with full points 10 MPs from five rounds. Earlier Georgia crushed Norway in the fourth round which included Carlsen in the Norwegian team. For the Russians they had a bad day with their top two teams losing their round 5 match-ups. Russia 2 lost to the Armenians, Russia 1 lost to the Hungarians which includes Peter Leko and Judit Polgar on board 3.
