1 June 2011, Kuala Lumpur - In Penang, the annual Inter- State chess competition organized by MSSM begins. For the under-18 age group, the top favorites are WFM Alia Anin Azwa bt Bakri and Muhd Nabil b Azman Hisham for the girls and boys category respectively.

Laylo Maintains Lead, Asian Zonals

28 May 2011, Kuala Lumpur - At the Asian Zonals 3.3 in Tagatay, Philippines, GM Laylo Darwin (pix above) continues to lead heading into the 7th round with 5.0 points. Four other players are bunched in the 4.5 points group. They include Goh, Paragua, Megaranto,and Torre.



In the women's, five players are bunched at 4.5 ponts after the sixth round.Among them are Sukander (pix below), Le, Li Ruofan,Nguyen and Tuvshintugs.

Kamaluddin Yusof Wins Rapid Open, Jom Gempau!

28 May 2012, Kuala Lumpur - At the JomGempau Melaka, the winners of the Rapid Open were 1st Kamaluddin Yusof (pix above), 2nd Abdullah Che Hassan and third Muhd Nabil Azman Hisham.

While in the Blitz, the winners were 1 st Foo Chin Kee, 2nd Muhd Syazwan Zulkifli, 3rd Zarul Syafiq, 4th Kamaluddin Yusof, 5th Abdullah Che Hassan.

Asian Zonals – Laylo Darwin Leads

26 May 2011, Kuala Lumpur – At Tagatay City, Philippines, the Asian Zonals 3.3 Open and Women’s Chess Championship 2011 is ongoing.

GM Laylo Darwin leads with 3 points and met GM Cao Sang, Malaysian Open Champion 2010 in round 4 on top board earlier this afternoon.

The Sports Enquirer reported that Laylo, the 2009 Asian Zonal champion, surged on top by besting Vietnamese M. Nguyen Van Huy in the third round Wednesday.

At 2.5 points were GM John Paul Gomez and IM Rolando Nolte, who agreed to a truce in the tournament organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, and hosted by the Tagaytay City government through Mayor Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino.

Filipino IM Oliver Barbosa (2.5 points) is still gunning for a win against Singaporean top seed GM Zhang Zhong (2.0 points).

Gelfand Wins Candidates Final

26 May 2011, Kuala Lumpur – In Kazan, Russia, the sixth game of the Candidates Final generated a major win for Boris Gelfand. Grischuk played a Gruefeld Opening and ran into trouble with a novelty move by Gelfand and lost. With this win, Gelfand will get the chance to challenge the reigning World Chess Champion, GM Vishy Anand for the world title.

The official website of the tournament reported that Boris Gelfand won the last, sixth game of FIDE Candidates Matches final in Kazan against Russian Alexander Grischuk and became challenger for the World Champion Viswanathan Anand from India. In an extremely good performance Grischuk stopped his clock after move 35 and four hours playing. During the press conference, Gelfand reportedly said that he was fortunate that his opponent chose the Gruenfeld, an opening that he is very familiar.

IM MAS Declared Winner Of Warrior Weekend

23 May 2011, Kuala Lumpur - The Warrior weekend was recently held at DATCC and easily won by Malaysia's no. 1 chess player, IM MAS Hafizulhelmi.


The DAT chess cente blog reported that IM Mas Hafizul breezed through the Warrior Weekend with a perfect 7 score with recently crowned Ampang Chessmaster champion Sumant Subramaniam coming in second with 6 points. Sumant younger brother, Shreyes and Kamalariffin Wahiduddin came in 3rd and 4th respectively with 5.5 points.

The event attracted 46 participants, a far cry from the previous 92 and 106 players playing in the first 2 weekender series i.e. Renegade and Maverick. But the organizer is not deterred by the low number of participants and attributes it to school exams, MSSS/M selection and too many events as the main reasons for the low turnout.

Asian Youth 2011 Update!

22 May 2011, Kuala Lumpur – Here are the final rankings and points scored for the individual played for the Malaysian contingent in Subic Bay, Philippines that had participated in the Asian Youth Chess Championship 2011.

Highest ranked achieved is Teh De Zen, with a fourth placing in the Under-10 girls category, followed by Tan Li Ting with a sixth placing in the Under-14 girls category.

Grischuk Meets Gelfand – Finals of Candidates Match 2011

17 May 2011, Kuala Lumpur – Here are two games from the Candidates Match 2011 in Kazan, Russia. Grischuk beats Kramnik in a crucial playoff tiebreak after two earlier drawn games. This means Grischuk will progress to the finals to meet Boris Gelfand.

TWIC reported that Alexander Grischuk showed amazing calmness under pressure to progress to the final of the World Chess Championship Candidates in Kazan. He defeated former World Chess Champion Vladimir Kramnik in a blitz playoff. He will meet Boris Gelfand who finally defeated Gata Kamsky in the blitz after being extremely close to going out. The final starts on Thursday 19th May.

In the other semi-finals of the Candidates Match 2011, Boris Gelfand won easily two games against Gata Kamsky. One of the games is shown below.

The winning tie-break game between Vladimir Kramnik and Alexander Grischuk is shown below. Kramnik played a fatal mistake by moving 47.Rb5 allowing Grischuk to capture the rook with his knight 47…Nxb5, game over and white resigned as black as a winning three pawns and a rook against white’s trapped pawn and a white colored bishop.

Asian Youth 2011, Philippines – After Round 3

 

16 May 2011, Kuala Lumpur – Here is the latest points achieved by the Malaysian contingent at the Asian Youth Chess Championship 2011 in Subic Bay, Philippines after round 3. Most of the players have achieved at least a point each except for one girl participant.

Sumant Declared Winner Of Ampang Chessmaster 2011

16 May 2011, Kuala Lumpur – Sumant Subramaniam was declared the champion of yesterday’s Ampang Chessmaster 2011 held in Ampang, Kuala Lumpur. Sumant scored 6.5 points over seven rounds and beating 105 other players.

Second, was Ian Udani, the early favorite, scored 6.0 points. Third place went to Ahmad Fadzil Nayan. Fourth, Kamaluddin Yusof, and fifth, new comer, Allan Umadhay of the Philippines.

THE AMPANG CHESSMASTER 2011

The Ampang Chessmaster concluded yesterday with Sumant Subramiam emerging as champion after triumphing over 2 Filipino challengers in the form of Ian Udani in the penultimate round and newcomer Allan Umadhay in the last round. It is a good pick up by Sumant after his almost disastrous qualification for the SEA Games squad.

For his valiant effort, Sumant won the Ampang Chessmaster trophy and was presented the RM500 cash prize by Ampang MP, YB Zuraida Kamaruddin. 3 players tied with 6 points but based on tie break, Ian Udani came in Second after defeating Mohd Fadli Zakari a.k.a Stonemaster (who ended up 9^th), Ahmad Fadzil Nayan 3^rd after ousting Veteran winner, Norazman Ismail and Kamaluddin Yusoff 4^th after his win over Ampang best player winner, Mohd Faizal Roslan.

Filipino Allan Umadhay, a newcomer to be reckon with, came in 5^th with 3 other players who share the same points, Ahmad Rubel 6^th, Rizal Kamal 7^th, Kamalariffin 8^th. Fadli Zakaria and Foo Chee Kin wrapped up the 9^th and 10^th spot.

During the announcement of the results, there was a slight error on the 5^th best player for the Primary school children with Haziq Aiman Nizam being left out of the winners list. Haziq’s name was accidentally left out and in his place, Chew Zhi Xuan’s name was mentioned. Whilst the winners list and the prizes will not be changed, the organizer have apologized to the parents and moving forward, we will strive to better the process and improve the situation where such error can be minimized further or ultimately eliminated.

Asian Youth 2011 Philippines Update!

15 May 2011, Kuala Lumpur – At the Subic Bay, Philippines the first round of the Asian Youth Chess Championship 2011 got underway. The early results on the official website (subicchess.blogspot.com) indicated that the Malaysian players that won the first round included Wong Jian Wen (U-16), Teh De Juan (U-10), Wong Yinn Long (U-10), Nithyalakshmi Sivanesan (G-12) and Goh Jia Yi (G-8, walkover win). With the exception of Tan Yong Zhao (U-12) who managed a draw.

There are still some unfinished scores on the board and the complete picture has to wait.

Pertandingan Catur Terbuka PACU 2011

15 Mei 2011, Kuala Lumpur – Satu pertandingan catur anjuran bersama Pusat Akademi Catur Utara (PACU) dan Persatuan Catur Prestij Perlis (PCPP) akan diadakan pada 28 Mei 2011 (Sabtu) di Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sri Indra Kangar, Perlis.

Malaysia Participates In Asian Youth 2011, Philippines

14 May 2011, Kuala Lumpur – The Malaysian Chess Federation has submitted a Malaysian chess contingent to the Philippines to participate in the Asian Youth Chess Championship 2011 Invitation in Subic Bay.

The Malaysian youth will be participating in the Girls and Open Categories for the U-8, U-10, U-12, U-14, U-16 and U-18. The players are as listed below:-

Two Games From Euro Women Championship 2011

14 May 2011, Kuala Lumpur – The European Women Chess Championship 2011 is ongoing in Tbilisi, Georgia and here are two games from the tournament. One is the game between Kateryna Lahno against Sopio Nikoladze in round 1 and the second is between Viktorija Cmilyte and Marina Romanko in round 7 of the tournament.

Currently both Cmilyte and Lahno are in the top three positions. Cmilyte with 6.0 points in joint first and Lahno in third with 5.5 points. Tournament is played over 11 rounds and will end on the 18th of May 2011.
