image

image

9 Sep 2012, Kuala Lumpur – Today is the last round of the 40th Chess Olympiad in Istanbul, Turkey and the men play Thailand and we are already 2-0 up after IM Lim Yee Weng won his board and Lim Zhuo Ren on fourth board.

In the ladies, Malaysia play Estonia and the fourth board has been declared a draw where Camilia Johari played against WFM Tuuli Vahtra. Malaysia 0.5-0.5 level! Three boards still playing.

Latest News: Malaysia win against Thailand in the open category. IM Mok, IM Lim Yee Weng and Lim Zhuo Ren won their board games except for IM Liew Chee-Meng who went down to a lower rated player on third board.

image

Meanwhile the ladies had a tough night tonight as they went down 1-3 to Estonia. Our points came from Tan Li Ting and Camilia Johari on boards 3 and 4. Our top boarders, Nur Najiha and Nur Nabila got whipped. Nur Najiha had 2 pawns and a rook against white’s four pawns and a rook. Najiha’s pawns has no clear path to queen while the pawns were swarming around. While Nur Nabila had fallen into a mating net. The white queen checked black on the e6 square forking the undefended black rook on c8 at the same time.

Game Plan for round 10 vs Japan, Philippines!

Japan vs Malaysia (Open)

Philippines vs Malaysia (Women)

7 Sep 2012, Kuala Lumpur – After round 9 double defeat for Malaysia, we prepare for round 10 tonight against Japan (Open) and Philippines (Women). In the open category, Malaysia has rested Lim Zhuo Ren and allowed IM Liew Chee-Meng on fourth board.

Japan (Open)

As Japan is rated lower than Malaysia in the open, in theory, Malaysia are the favourites for this tie and should win. While the ladies are again the under-dogs in the tie and are expected to lose. That’s only the theory as reality indicate differently as the ladies continue to baffle the favourites and beat them fair and square.

In the women, WCM Fong Mi Yen is rested and in comes back on first board is WFM Nur Najiha bt Azman Hisham.

Round 10 begins!

Japan vs Malaysia

Philippines vs Malaysia

Minutes ago, Malaysia’s women Nur Nabila drew her board and Camilia Johari resigned her fourth board. Malaysia is 0.5-1.5 down against Philippines!

image

Meanwhile Yeoh Li Tian is making some headway on his board. Li Tian is playing the black pieces. Both IM Lim Yee Weng and IM Jimmy Liew on boards 2 and 4 are also making steady progress on their boards. They both have a lead in development and attack.

image

In the women’s, Tan Li Ting has a winning endgame on board 3. Her passed h pawn is two steps away from queening and the white’s pawns are nowhere near their middle positions. Looks like Malaysia will get her first board win against Philippines.

Latest news: Tan Li Ting just won her third board play as her opponent resigned minutess ago. Malaysia 1.5-1.5 draw! Nur Najiha now has control on the destiny of this Malaysian chess team! Can she deliver the winning point?

image

image

Latest news: Just minutes ago, IM Lim Yee Weng drew on second board. It was a bit drawish position anyway. IM Mok appears to be ahead in an endgame of six black pawns against six white pawns. While Li Tian still ahead in positional advantage as is IM Jimmy Liew. Malaysia level 0.5-0.5.

image

Just minutes ago, IM Mok Tze-Meng of Malaysia won his first board game against FM Kojima Shinya of Japan. Malaysia 1.5-0.5!

image

image

Minutes ago, IM Jimmy Liew just gave Malaysia the winning board point on fourth board. By playing 50. Bd5+ helped push the black king back to 50…Kd7 allowing the white king to push to 51. Kd4 and eventually to win black’s f5 pawn and black’s pawns will fall apart.

Well done Jimmy, Malaysia win 2.5-0.5! Though we still have Li Tian’s game to complete and he has a slight advantage. Let’s see if he wins.

image

Finally, Li Tian got a draw on third board. A fair result. Malaysia win 3-1 over Japan.

image

Finally for the women, Nur Najiha had a drawn game on first board against the higher seeded Philippines. Malaysia 2-2 draw against Philippines.
