Norms At DAT Malaysian Open 2010

9 September 2010, Kuala Lumpur – A few players managed to achieve their respective GM and IM norms at the recently concluded 7th IGB Dato’ Arthur Tan Malaysian Open including Malaysia’s Ronnie Lim.

Eight players, including one lady player, all achieved their respective (GM/IM/FM) norms. Fireyrook wishes to thank chief arbiter for this information.

Malaysian Open 2010 Found On The Week In Chess!

GM Cao Sang Is Winner of DAT Malaysian Open 2010!

7 September 2010, Kuala Lumpur – GM Cao Sang is proclaimed the Dato’ Arthur Tan Malaysian Open Chess Champion for 2010! Cao Sang had 7.0 pts and 54 tie break points.

In second place is GM Zhou Weiqi of China who also had 7.0 pts and 52.5 tie-break points, and in third is IM Sethuraman S P of India with 7.0 points and 51.0 tie-break points. The top seed from India, GM Gupta Abhijeet fell to fourth placing with 6.5 pts.

Eight players were in the 6.5 points category that include GM Gupta, IM Nguyen VH, GM Wen Yang , IM Swayangsu,  Wan Yunguo of China, GM Smerdon David from Australia, IM Gao Rui of China, and GM Xu Jun of China.

On the side: IM Jimmy Liew of Malaysia lost to GM Marat of Uzbekistan, Ronnie Lim beat IM Mok Tze Meng. GM Ziaur Rahman lost to GM Wang Li of China, GM Murshed Niaz of Bangladesh won agains GM Arun Prasad S of India, Ian Udani lost to WGM Huang Qian of China, GM Schebler Gerhard of Germany lost to FM Mahmud Syarif of Indonesia.

Besides congratulating the winners, news has spread that this year’s edition of the Malaysian Chess Festival might be the last! If so, then fireyrook would like to wish farewell to all contestants and sponsors who made this year’s Malaysian Chess Festival 2010 a wonderful chess event and spectacular success!

Let’s hope a new white knight will take up the shoes of Dato’ Tan Chin Nam who has announced his retirement from chess in a dinner during this year’s chess festival. You are sadly going to be missed very much by the Malaysian chess fraternity!

Three Way Tie At DAT Malaysian Open

7 September 2010, Kuala Lumpur – As the two top boards of the 7th Dato’ Arthur Tan Malaysian Open ended in draws, and three players, GM Zhou Weiqi of China, IM Senthuraman of India and GM Cao Sang of Vietnam, have all ended up with 7 points from 9 rounds of play.

Who is champion of the 7th Dato’ Arthur Tan Malaysian Open 2010 depends on the tie-break points given by the computer Swiss-system…… and the winner is….. (drums beating) ??
We will have to wait for the official results at 6 pm this afternoon…..

Zhou Weiqi, Sethuraman Joint Leaders Into Final Round

6 September 2010, Kuala Lumpur – GM Zhou Weiqi and GM Gupta Abhijeet ended with a draw in round 8 leaving GM Zhou Weiqi ahead with 6.5 points going into the final, 9th round tomorrow morning. Another player from India also managed a similar 6.5 points, after IM Sethuraman won against Wan Yunguo of China with the black pieces on board 3.

Our Malaysian musketeers, IM Mok Tze-Meng lost to FM Nguyen Duc Hoa of Vietnam on board 9, IM Jimmy Liew drew on the 16th board against IM Roy Chowdhury Saptarshi of India, and, Ronnie Lim drew his 19th board game against GM Das Neelotpal of India.

On the sidelines, Ian Udani of the Philippines overcame GM R R Laxman of India, giving Ian Udani a possible IM norm. Earlier, Ian Udani has beaten two IMs and drew with one IM, and with this GM scalp in this one tournament, makes a possible IM norm in hand for him.

Round 9 pairings is shown below and will start at 9.30 am tomorrow, 7th September 2010, Tuesday. Top board will be GM Zhou against IM Sethuraman, both with 6.5 points  each.

Wen Yang Tops The Leaderboard!

4 September 2010, Kuala Lumpur – Here is a snapshot of the current top 20 players of the on-going 7th IGB Dato’ Arthur Tan Malaysian Chess Open after the round 4. GM Wen Yang leads with 4.0 pts from four rounds of play. The top seed, GM Gupta Abhijeet of India is lying in fourth spot with 3.5 points.

Today two rounds will be played and Sunday is a rest day for the players of the 7th IGB DAT Malaysian Open. Age-group competition will be held on Sunday.
