Mamak The Return Wins The Dream Team Weekend

31 May 2010, Kuala Lumpur – Here’s the report from Najib Wahab on the recently concluded Dream Team Weekend held at the DATCC on the 29th May 2010.

The Dream became a nightmare when only 4 teams showed up for the event and the organizer had to change the tournament format and lower the prize money but all in all, it was a fun weekend for the 16 players who were there (me included).

The tournament format was changed from Swiss to Double Round Robin with 3 rounds being played in the morning, and another 3 rounds in the afternoon, and the winner is determined by the Match points and not by game points.

In the end, the final ranking was as follows:

image

At the end of the team event, 6 players stayed on for a double round robin of blitz, with RM10 entry fee and the winner to take all. Zaidan Zulkipli did well to win 9 points out of a possible 10 and together with it, the RM60 prize money.

Here are the following team compositions and the respective scores achieved by each team member.

image

The organizer felt that the very poor response was because of lack of publicity, the MASUM event held during the same, the 1st GM Training program also held at the same time, and the long weekend where most players have probably gone back to the “kampong” to take advantage of the long weekend. But the show must go on and it was nice to see that the Chess players who were there, were able to accommodate the bizarre and sad turnout, and turn it into something fun and enjoyable.

Thanks to the 15 players that have come for the tournament – Najib Wahab was and shall remain very grateful for their understanding, support and cooperation for successfully completing the one-day event.

Still Even 5-5 After Game 10, World Chess Ch 2010

Anand, Topalov draw in game 10 for World Chess title
(AFP) – 4 hours ago

image

SOFIA — India's defending champion Viswanathan Anand and his Bulgarian challenger Veselin Topalov drew in the tenth round of their 12-game match for the world chess title on Friday.
The draw was agreed on the 60th move, allowing the two to keep even with a total result of 5-5 points. The next game is scheduled for Sunday.
Anand, known as the "Tiger from Madras", and Topalov have two wins each, while six games have ended in a draw.
The first player to score 6.5 points or more after the 12 games will be declared the new world champion.
If the scores are level after 12 games, the two will play four tie-break games of rapid chess, where each player has a total of 25 minutes to make his moves.
If the scores are still even after that, the new world champion will be decided in five five-minute blitz chess matches of two games each, ultimately followed by one sudden-death game.
The 40-year-old Anand first became world champion in 2007 and successfully defended his title in 2008.
Topalov, 35, won the right to challenge him by beating Gata Kamsky of the United States in the semi-final in February 2009.
The new world chess champion will win a prize of 1.2 million euros (1.58 million dollars), while the loser will take home 800,000 euros.
Chess fans can follow all the games to run until May 13 online at www.anand-topalov.com.

Excel Chess Team Is New Leader At 3rd DATCC KL Chess Team League 2010

6 May 2010 - Here are the full official results from Najib Wahab for the round 6 of the 3rd DATCC KL Chess Team League 2010 held on the 5th May 2010 last night. Excel Chess Team has emerged to be the top team in the league with 10 Match Points and 18 board wins beating Think Big to second place who had 10 MP and 15 board wins only.

image

KAM MAH was beaten by the young turks of the league Excel Chess Team 1.5-2.5 last night where the two top boards did not play as each opponent did not come. One forfeit board win for KAM MAH and another forfeit to Excel on board 2. Tan Ken Wei’s game against Nik Ahmad Farouqi decided the match.

Think Big narrowly beats Price Waterhouse Cooper 2.5 – 1.5. The top two boards of Think Big won the night. GM Z Rahman and Yeoh Li Tian brought the wins and the draw coming from Mohd Faisal Zakaria on fourth board.

Team AU outclassed Gung Ho last with a 4-0 win. So did the veteran’s team of Tan&Tan shocked the ladies team, CS Solutions with 4-0 drubbing. Meanwhile First Saturday Chess Team lost to Sea Horse with Malaysia’s No. 1 player, IM Mas Hafizulhelmi making an appearance for Sea Horse on first board. Amier Hamzah of First Saturday made the major win against Tun Seri Lanang Othman of Sea Horse. It was decidedly a close affair with Amier Hamzah pinning the black King in the corner square. Amier Hamzah was a piece ahead of black when I left.

Nusa Mahkota Chess Club overwhelmed Black Pearl 3.5-0.5. While DATCC Chess Team overcomed UKM due to absentions on UKM’s three other boards winning 3-1. And Ad-Hoc drew 2-2 against 17 Chess Club who were without two players on two boards.

Stonemaster Anjur Rapid Blitz 9 Mei 2010
